Scientist Hunt
Review by Spam, February 13th 2004, 01:20:04
Introduction:
Scientist Hunt, developed by Rich Whitehouse (who also created the HLDM bot known as Jumbot) is a multiplayer mod for Half-Life based around the sadistic murdering of innocent scientists. While it hasn't been updated in a few years, it remains a fun diversion from more serious games.

Gameplay:
There are five gameplay modes: Standard Hunting, Stealth Hunting, Traditional Slaughter, Live in Fear and Madness.
-Standard Hunting involves splitting the players into two teams and killing the limited number of scientists in the map, who are hopelessly running for their lives. The team that kills the most scientists wins each round.
-Stealth Hunting is just like Standard Hunting, except the scientists stand around until they see you and killing them without being seen earns you double points.
-Traditional Slaughter features an unlimited number of scientists who only run away screaming if you hurt them or kill one of their buddies.
-Live in Fear isn't team-based. Instead, it lets one player control a scientist. The player's goal is to avoid getting killed by other players. If another player does manage to kill the scientist player, then he or she will become the scientist. It's basically like playing tag with deadly weapons.
-Madness also isn't team-based, but the scientists run around poking each other and the players with poison needles.

The game often degenerates into deathmatch with innocent bystanders, but fortunately there's an option to disable damage between players. It's just a shame that the few Scientist Hunt server operators out there never use this option.

The weapons are the same as standard Half-Life deathmatch with a few additions:
-A large, spiked hammer can send scientists flying with a horizontal swing or crush them with a vertical blow.
-The handcannon is a sawed-off, double-barrel shotgun. At close range it is very effective at giving players a quick anatomy lesson.
-The chainsaw is pretty self-explanatory. It's great for carving up scientists and making a big mess.

Graphics:
The graphics aren't much different from Half-Life's. It uses the same models and many of the same textures. The models of the new weapons aren't anything spectacular, even by the standards of the time the game was last updated. However, secret areas in a couple of the maps are an interesting sight.

Sound:
Scientist Hunt's sounds, like its graphics, largely borrow from Half-Life. Of course, it's always fun to hear scientists screaming as you chase them down with a crowbar. A few of the maps feature music, some of which seems out of place in a game involving brutal mass murder, but serves to add to the game's bizarre flavor. On that note, I'd really like to know what band does that song in 5amsci :P

Summary:
Despite its age, Scientist Hunt is a fun game to play every now and then. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any servers! Perhaps an update to this classic Half-Life mod would create some more interest. While that doesn't seem likely, one can always dream!

The chainsaw is great for painting the walls red.

Fly, scientist, fly!

Scientist corpses make great footballs. Try to make a field goal!
