Welcome to the NHK [ 2006 ]
The main character finds himself living the life of a hikkikomori, someone who is afraid and unable to go outside. The anime deals with current topics in Japan such as collective suicides, hikkikomoris, MMORPGs (by making fun of Final Fantasy XI), and companies that take advantage of its consumers. It is told absolutely beautifully, with humor and attention to detail, and stays thought provoking until the very end. A must see.

The Man From Earth [ 2007 ]
Just when a man wants to leave everything behind, a bunch of friends appear on his doorstep to help him pack. They beg to know why the man wants to leave, and so the story of the man is told and the reason for the departure slowly brought to light.
I won't tell anything else. Just get the movie (the director encourages downloading off the internet!), sit back and enjoy. There are no special effects whatsoever. Only a room full of actors. Brilliant science fiction.

The Last Run [ 2004 ]
Fred Savage. Does that name ring a bell? How about "The Wonder Years"? Okay. Yes, that Fred Savage.
The main actor gets left behind by his girlfriend and after hearing his friend's advice he's becoming addicted to sexual satisfaction, making him sleep with every random girl he stumbles across to get over the "broken heart".

Stardust [ 2007 ]
To gain the heart of the love of his life, Tristan has to retrieve a fallen star. Unfortunately, the star landed across The Wall, which seems to be a magical barrier that leads into a fabulous world. The king of this world is about to die and his sons try to kill each other to receive the crown. They will be told to bring back an amulet - which happens to be connected to the fallen star - that tells who is destined to be the new king. And a pack of witches are after the stardust as well, as it promises to make them young again. So, the race begins.
Apparently the movie is based on a book, which I haven't read (yet), but I found the movie could've had a better cast. Especially Robert De Niro was a bit ... disturbing. Nevertheless, if pure entertainment is your wish, Stardust might grant you just as much.

Battlestar Galactica Razor [ 2007 ]
If you haven't had the pleasure of watching the Battlestar Galactica series, maybe this movie might finally convince you. Although I'd say you should have at least watched Season 1-2, the movie surely is breathtaking and thrilling even without proper background info, as the movie takes place somewhere around the second season and tells the story of a different battlestar, the Pegasus. I can't stress enough that this series, including this movie, is simply awesome and you owe it to yourself to watch every bit of it.

Pan's Labyrinth [ 2006 ]
A young girl journeys along her pregnant mother to the girl's stepfather, a brutal leader of the Spanish army. During their stay in the woodlands, the girl lives in her fantasy world of fauns and fairies to cope with reality.
Pan's Labyrinth is a tale, and a terrifying and frightening one at that. It doesn't shy away to show graphically intense violence to the viewer, much of which probably is not really necessary, but it's there. The girl's fantasy world is very rich in detail, and after a while it makes the audience think if it is actually fantasy or not...

Bridge to Terabithia [ 2007 ]
A boy and a girl meet and become best friends, run around in the woods and imagine fantasy worlds, things attacking them and other stuff. The only thing I will say about this movie is that it's apparently quite hard to find convincing children actors...

Seirei no Moribito - Guardian of the Sacred Spirit [ 2007 ]
A female bodyguard - a spear wielder - is asked to be the guardian of a prince, who's fate it is to carry the egg of the water spirit, after the prince's father says the child must be killed or else the water spirit is going to live and a dry season will haunt the country. It is the mother's wish to send the prince away with the bodyguard - without anybody knowing - secretly hoping that one day she will meet her son again.
The animation is beautiful, the story intelligent and fresh. Highly recommended.

Balls of Fury [ 2007 ]
Randy used to be one of the best ping-pong players back in his childhood, nowadays he's living the life of a loser. Until an FBI agents hires him to go on a secret mission, which is to dive deep into the chinese underground ping-pong league to get the attention of Feng, the killer of Randy's father. Randy turns out to be good enough - with the help of Maggie's ping-pong techniques - to be invited to the sudden death ping-pong tournament at Feng's temple.
Simply put, this movie is bad. Really bad. Even worse. Christopher Walken saves the movie a tiny bit, but overall he seems out of place. Though still, because of its trashy nature, I found it funny. Even if the jokes are mostly bad, they're so bad you'll be chuckling nevertheless. If you want to waste a good hour, this movie is yours. I didn't, but then again I had high hopes for this movie.

The Last Mimzy [ 2007 ]
On vacation a boy and a girl - siblings - find a weird box that flew from the sky. It contains never before seen materials and a plush bunny. The girl gains the ability to see into the future, the boy knows how everything works and is held together. Though one day the true purpose of those items is revealed...
Unlike Bridge to Terabithia I found this movie very watchable, despite ugly, ugly product placement (Intel, Sprite, Sony PSP). The children's acting is convincing enough to make you care for the story. The ending is a bit weird, but nevertheless not as much of a waste of time as I thought it would turn out to be. Give it a try.

Indeed, Battlestar Galactica reeks of awesomeness. As for the Last Mimzy, you should check out the short story it was based on, Mimsy Were the Borogoves.
