10,000 Days by ToolReview by psychomessiahs, January 30th 2007, 15:19:51 | |||||
| I had some spare coins lately, so I went out to the market to see what I could find. I came across this CD, sold at 11€. I always loved Tool in a way, so I just bought it.
Introduction: Tool is Band of Four: Paul D'Amour, Danny Carey, Adam Jones and Maynard James Keenan that created their own original style of music, hardly comparable to anything around. Its hard, its metal, it is even somehow industrial and experimental. Like a Mixture of NIN, Sepultura and a little Pearl Jam. The band is especially famous for their ingenious videos that all are artistic in a way you rarely find. I added one of their Videos to the links, have a look. From 1992 to 2001 Tool released 5 LPs including one Live Album but then they somehow disappeared. 2006 They finally stroke back with their latest record "10k Days". First Impression: The Box was still sealed in plastic and it already had a weird, unusual feeling. The Bo x is made from paper and almost 2cm high. The upper half has two glasses in it through which you can see the eyes of a face that is printed below. I openend it and was stunned. The box can be unfold to a U form and you can look through the glasses on the inside of the other half. Hard to explain, just look at the screenshot
WTF is that for?: Now the booklet is attached inside the CD-Box in a way, that while you flip though it, you always have one page on the back of the Box. All pages have artwork printed twice on them. If you look throw the glasses at the Booklet the two identical images form one three dimensional Image that will blow your head off, no joking. That and the amazing "regular" artwork in the CD paid me well back for the money I paid! Tell us about the damn music already!: Well a cds main reason is not to be looked at, but to play music, so what do your ears get? The cd features 11 new songs. That may not feel like much, but tool songs are usually overlong and so the cd has a complete playtime of 77 minutes. The sound you get is what you would expect from tool. The songs are dark and monumental, feature soundeffects and the fast and partly apprupt change of tempo, loudness and styles may feel uncomfortable for those not used to it, but offer a strange kind of beauty when you open yourself to them. The cd has aggressive songs like the first one "Vicarious" aswell as ambient songs like "Lipan Conjuring" and melancholic ones like "Intension". Tool is not compatible with the mainstream and will certainly not get played on major radio stations. Summary: So, is the new LP 10,000 Days worth the money I paid? For not even 15 Bucks you get true art. The package is a class of its own and well worth every cent, the music is wonderful and dark and aggressive and everything you want to hear from tool. Overall Rating: Price 10/10 - In a world of illegal downloads everywhere it is almost visionary for a major label like Sony BMG to sell a cd that well made for a lot less than usual. Eyes 10,000/10 - I have NEVER seen artwork on a cd that wonderful, inspiring and innovative like on this one Ears 8/10 - If you love tool as much as I do, you will love this cd. (If you dont, you wont )
