Silence

Alex looked at the walls around him. He was in some kind of small box this time. In the other areas of Halfquake, he had heard sounds around him, whispering, mocking. The silence of this new area was frightening. Alex braced himself as he heard the floor give way below him and the box shattered.

Now he felt like he was falling. Lights flashed before him, and there was no visible floor. The entire arena seemed to be in mid air. Alex shielded his eyes against the lights and walked forwards. After a few moments, he noticed a box with a circle etched into it. He touched it and nothing happened. He attempted to move it, but still there was no effect. The box seemed to be stuck in midair, without support. He ran his finger around the circumference of the circle. The box span wildly for a moment then stopped, the interior of the circle lit up. He searched around for another and did the same. The box reappeared in the middle of the arena. He fell into it.

Alex found himself in a spinning room. The walls were decorated with a white grid spinning at high speeds. After a moment it stopped, and the walls split apart. Alex approached them. A rotating platform was in front of him, suspended by whatever force controlled the physics of this place, over darkness, Alex sensed that there was a long way down. He jumped onto the platform, and then across to another. A black crate was suspended in the air again, Alex could see that there were two more, then another ledge before he got to the exit. He jumped to the second crate, and it started rising towards the ceiling. "Crap" Alex thought as he jumped to the next crate quickly. A diary page lay on this crate.

"Second day.

The pointer rotated two full circles. I think this is my second day in here, at least, the second day I'm awake...

This place is absolutely strange, not to mention sick. A thing which looked like a human being to me appeared a few hours ago and called me 'Victim' and even "Mister Victim'. He told me something about a part called 'Patience'. There are parts???

I felt my chin going down. I could not hear the voice of the ghost (?) in front of me any more. 'Where the hell am I?' I thought.

Suddenly the speech ended.

And then the Nightmare started.

I had to fight. Since my time in the army I've never hit something, or even touched a weapon again...

It was a deformed thing, gargling like a mixture of a drunken man and a pigeon. and also shooting at me with green lightnings. I evaded them, ran to the beast and hit it three times with my fist. Its claws slit my back and my neck. I screamed like I've never screamed before and felt my own warm blood running down on my body. I grabbed the tiny head of this monster, and used all my strength to turn it round twice. Then the creature fell down and stopped breathing and gargling.

After a long walk and a sick installation which caused a lot of strange sounds when I walked through it, a weapon appeared in front of me. It seemed to be a crossbow or something like that. When I took the weapon, suddenly two of those creatures were standing behind me. Four shots later I felt weak, hungry and thirsty, and my organism demanded sleep.

But I couldn't sleep. I knew if I slept I wouldn't wake up again. So, I sat down for a short break, and now I'm writing this.

I'm afraid of further things waiting for me in the darkness..."

Alex was beginning to think of the darkness by now. He shuddered at the thought of more slaves out there, hiding, waiting. He attempted to think of other thoughts, like what he was going to do to Murther once he got out of here. He jumped into the exit.

He was now in some kind of large installation. What looked like air vents led off in four different directions from him. He crawled through, into the darkness beyond the first one. A switch was on the wall in front of him. He pressed it, ran, and dived back into the vent, expecting the walls or the ceiling to cave in and crush him, or the floor to collapse. Nothing happened except a sound was added to the background noise. "Paranoid" he heard a small voice in his head say.

In the fourth room, he saw another switch beside the air vent. He pressed it, and a wall slid out of the way. Alex shielded his eyes until he could get used to the light. Then he walked in. Armour suits were in small alcoves behind glass doors. Alex could not open them. He smashed his fist against one, resulting in a moment of pain as he felt his finger break. "Why the hell are these here?" he yelled into the darkness. 'To mock you again' the voice spoke.

Alex entered the middle room again and pressed the exit button. Glass appeared blocking the vent. He moved to the right to look and the floor gave way. He landed on a ledge. His broken hand smashed against a switch, both activating it and causing him agony. He jumped down to a lower ledge and walked along it. A lightning bolt nearly knocked him. He activated the second switch and felt pressure in the room rise. The slave died first and the glass at the bottom of the room broke. Alex quickly fell into the exit below.
