Recommendation for hellish Series |
 Since this is a site for connoisseurs of sadism, why not recommend something hellish?
I have always liked well done animations and am fond of the darker styles that come with hell-themed series so there was no going around Helluva Boss (free on youtube) and Hazbin Hotel (Amazon Prime) by Vivienne Medrano. Those series take place in the same universe with whacky creatures residing in Hell either by birth or because they were sent there from the world of the living. Fictional stories with a lot of comedy but often based on historical concepts of daemons and how people thought hell works (obviously there are a lot of incompatible traditions here, so it's a mix and made convenient for story-telling)
In case you don't already know the plots:
In Helluva Boss you follow the adventures of hellborn imp Blitzo (the o is silent) who operates his own murder-for-hire agency IMP Immediate Murder Professionals. They're basically daemons plaguing the world of the living while struggling with their personal relationships and drama in hell. Funny, sadistic and surprisingly much romance.
Hazbin Hotel revolves around the daughter of Lucifer who still has hope for sinners to become good people and trying to establish a place for them to improve and ultimately go to heaven. It's a hotel because hotels are for people passing through - at least that's the idea. She is laughed at by pretty much every sinner and actively opposed by heaven and drags along her daemon friends but her incurable optimism in the face of impossible odds is actually pretty heartwarming. This one has more hell-lore with biblical figures such as Adam&Eve, arch angel Gabriel, Lucifer but also Lillith (a figure from pre-Christian stories who was said to be Adam's first wife but basically too feminist so she was banished - not considered a true story by Christian doctrine)
The style of animation is awesomely skilled and creative. I'm not sure what it is, but Vivienne Medrano has got it. |
