October 27, 1858 -

Theodore Roosevelt - the one I wouldn't have shot on sight - is born. It's not his legacy as a big game hunter or the 26th President or his unconstitutional forays into 'monopoly busting' or the like that make me admire him, but what John Milius was able to do with him in 'The Wind And The Lion' that makes me wish we had him back in office now... 'America wants all the oil alive or you (and France) dead.'

But I grow weary of the relentless assault on the good reputation of the printed word. And if I ran out of kindling on some bitter night when I wanted to sit by the fire with a Blake or a Bronte or a Bradbury, it would not pain me in the least to toss in a Bellesiles, revised or otherwise, and listen to the flames chew through its meaningless pages.

- a 'Fahrenheit 451' comment on what passes for journalism to the American Left by K. Sandstrom, Book Editor of 'The Cleveland Plain Dealer'
