Somos

Alex woke up to the sound of thunder. For a few minutes he thought he was finally out of Halfquake: Amen. He felt refreshed as he stood up. He remembered the events of recently in the same ways as a dream. He felt that he would now go off and get ready to work, it was odd though. He appeared to be in a dark hallway similar to that of his downstairs hallway. "Hmm, must have had too much vodka last night." he thought as he walked slowly towards the light which he thought was his kitchen. It wasn't. He was brought back to his senses when a lightning bolt and a large explosion hit the ground right outside the tunnel. It was not a dream. He really was here.

The name Somos flashed through his mind. He supposed it must be some creature in here. He ran out after another bolt of lightning hit the ground. He got to a safe position after darting across some stone over lava. Then he looked up.

The 'creature' was a gigantic machine with wings and a sadistic smile etched onto its 'face'. "You cannot escape alive" Its voice sounded loud and mocking as Alex flicked four switches beneath the base of this machine. He went back to the outer ledge and dived into a tunnel which had just opened up. Two slaves came at him. He picked up the crossbow lying by the entrance and shot them both down. He pressed a switch on the wall before proceeding back to the main room through a symbol teleport.

He repeated his performance at hitting the four switches again and ran for a second tunnel. This time he found himself on a high ledge above lava, in some lower gravity area. He jumped onto a disk platform and went round to where there were switches. He jumped and hit one, then had the wait while shooting at slaves for the platform to come back round. After the second switch had been hit, he went, killed another slave, and left the room. He opened the last tunnel, went to it, and walked into another room.

Four explosives crates lay on the floor with a submachine gun. He picked up the gun and began reading the sign. "Destroy the targets with explosives crates? they make it all too simple." Alex said to himself as he pushed the crates into holes in the main room. He walked back and pressed a button to activate something. A voice sounded shocked echoed through the room. "My god! He found out how to deactivate Somos' shield." The reactor exploded. Alex had a vision flash through his mind of Somos' shield generators exploding in the main room. Then he heard the sound of teleports.

Slaves entered as Alex ran for the exit. Their attacks missed him as he dived into the teleport. Outside, Somos had stepped up the attacks. On each shot, lightning bolts filled nearly the entire room. He would need to move quickly to evade them, whilst at the same time dealing with the slaves, which also shot at him. He took several down with the gun, but another one shot it out of his hands. As he fell and scrambled for it, the slave came up close and hit him with its claws. It raised them once more for the kill. Alex heard Somos fire again, at the same time, the slave fell. It took Alex a moment to realise that the bolt had sent a shard from the floor into its back. He ran for one of the lifts up to the upper levels of the room. Somos was attacking up there as well. Alex had to evade his lightning as he flicked the three switches on each platform. As he pressed the last one, he looked at the machine. The shield generator above Somos fell. The creature was dead. Alex watched as the lava drained from the room, revealing his escape route.
