Description:

In the noon, Hannes got up. The other children were in the school. His life had looked like that for some months. Then, his parents had a struggle, worse, than normally. His father had drunk too much and Hannes didn't know, what had happened. He got up and looked at the untidy apartment of his foster parents one more time. Nobody was at home. Hannes went out to enjoy the sun, because the windows hadn't been cleaned for years. But outside, it was really nice. Hannes thought that he could be happy, unlike in the children's home he had to go in when his father went to prison because of a murder. The three weeks hadn't been nice. Hannes didn't have enough to eat, even no decent clothes and the other bigger children made Hannes do jobs they didn't want to do. Especially toilet cleaning. The grown-ups working there didn't care about that. They had enough to do. Now, it was better. His foster parents didn't care really about him, but they supplied him materially. In the children's home he had learned many important things and he had learned what had happened between his parents. Above all, he had learned how to play poker. And he was going to do exactly this. He walked to an abandoned building site which was the meeting place of all the young players in town. On the way, Hannes wanted to eat an apple, but the shop owners, knowing boys like Hannes, left nothing standing outside the shop. Hannes didn't want to go in, because the owners always distrust boys entering their shops. Only one man had a stall standing outside with candy on it. But Hannes didn't want to steal there, because the man was really kind. Every Sunday the man walked down the streets of the town giving homeless people some money. Hannes had once stolen something from this man but he come back and paid it. His friends thought that he had gone mad but it didn't interest him. In an hour Hannes arrived at the place the others were already playing on. For some days Hannes had been the one who won many games and this was a good improvement for the not so large pocket money he get. He was the star. But this time, there was a difference. There was good action before Hannes arrived. All players were gathered around a new boy. In expensive-looking clothes, he was sitting on a barrel and smoking a cigar. Hannes got closer. Paul, Hannes' friend told him that the boy's name was Peter and that he had been playing for 2 hours but he had won every game. Hannes had always played relaxed and sometimes made mistakes to give his enemies a chance. Peter enjoyed winning and he liked others to lose. Arrogantly he talked to Hannes. "Hey, you are the guy the losers told me about. Let's play, I want to win against a good player." Hannes accepted the challenge. The other players lost and had to quit the round. The game developed into a duel. But the hopes of Hannes' friends were not fulfilled, he lost the game. In the evening, Hannes thought about the style of his enemy's play and understood it. He went to sleep knowing how to beat the other boy.
