Her mother told her once that she had been born feet first, and it had settled in N.'s head like a bird in the backyard, who had found the house they left for him. When she had her next birthday, she remembered those words, and asked her mother for the time she had been born, which was 4 14pm. She could hardly wait all day and throughout the birthday party she told everyone that she wasn ' t older yet, they shoudn ' t congratulate her yet. Looking at her cartoon adorned wristwatch, she ran off and locked herself in the bathroom at 4 13. Finally, finally, when the number changed, she looked at her feet and could feel the wonder of being older, the growth stored away somewhere all the past year, tumbled out like the clothes in her closet, bunching up in her toes and tingling up the path that she had taken into the world those many years ago. Now it was many plus one years ago. She opened the door to a world that had not changed, possibly not ready for a brand new N. to walk out and surprise it, and her grin was truth.

When the motions play through the calender again (ten times) to her birthday, she instead shrinks from clocks the first half of the day. Nerviously, N. extends her hands to it, to push it away, and notices again the scars. from when she had thrown it in anger and pain, from when she had-. That face would always replace the face she would so rather see, whose smile was truth. The year curled up at her feet and make expectant noises. She couldn ' t look at it, look at that wrong different inhuman hands. It had mutated to 4 17. The year had clawed up her legs, through and past her, and this year that had, so entirely against her will, suddenly come between them. The year where love stopped, and she had to keep going. She had missed the event, but that was not the reason N. offered tears candidly, from one face to another. It did not in any way try to confort her, superior and silent. Time had healed everyone else. It only mocked her.
