Setting down the papers, I sat outside the door to the office. They didn ' t want to give me a key, I ' ll just sit here until they let me in. Still getting paid. Across from me is a wall. Not so special, by the corner where it turns off a sign hangs reading "Foreign Language". There has never been a door in the wall, the meaning behind the sign forever lost. An angle appeals to me, and I wish yet again that I carried a camera.
I wonder what the birds think about this wall. They would if destroy it, if they had the tools. They would carve into it gaping holes and plant with a superior attitude nests and foliage alien to the linoleum hallway, the fluorescent-lit glossy-stoned hallway. Were they to have tools they would tear it down, I think Were they to be susceptible to hate and love and greed, I think they would not hesitate to colonise. How lucky they are that the windows along the opposite wall are never open. Out of pity were the birds denied storage barns.
How lucky I am that I do not own a key to my own office, and that one day, I am going to die.
