David Firth, owner of fat-pie.com Interview by TheAwake, August 23rd 2004, 18:14:12 | |||
Well first of all, thanks for the interview, David!
You're welcome guv'nor. Before we start with the questions I'd like to ask for an introduction of yourself. That sounds like a lot of fun. I'm David. I Make things. How would you describe your art? Dark random stuff that moves, featuring nice music. Or silly weird comedy. Do you like cartoons? Did those make you do this kind of movies? I love cartoons. South Park was always my biggest inspiration to make cartoons of my own as it looks so crappy, but so good at the same time. I never really liked flash cartoons though, all the ones I saw were just silly video game parodies and hamsters being tortured. This put me off learning flash until very recently. When and why did you decide to make animated movies? When I got a camcorder when I was 13. Why? Because It looked like fun. How did you get the idea of making a homepage and releasing your art in the internet? Well as long as I've had the internet, I've always been making pointless websites filled with stolen links and crappy pictures. One day I decided to try and get my first cartoon series going. I called it "Jim's Story" It was just a badly drawn cartoon made to mock my brother, but all my friends found it amusing so I made 5 episodes and stuck them on a website. The files were huge and had awful sound quality, no one visited the site and then it was shut down by Lycos. A complete failure. Why did you choose the name fat-pie.com for your site? Fatpie was my second cartoon series, it followed on from Jim's Story. Crust (Salad Fingers co-writer) used to call people "fatbag" and "fatpie" They were amusing insults. I wanted fatpie.com without the hyphen, but it's already taken..........why don't you have a look at it....... Were you nervous when you released your art to the web? Never. Because it was never seen. Did newgrounds.com affect your daily hits in a drastical way? I went from 60-100 hits a day to 13,000. I guess it had a small impact. How did you manage to get more visits for your page? I hacked google and made every search point to my site. Did you get hate mail? Ever got one where you thought the writer was right? I get hatemail all the time, but the haters never have constructive criticism, it's usually "UR GAY UR CARTONS ARE MESSED UP STOP MAIKIN DEM" The haters are never right because all they do is fire badly spelt abuse at me in caps. What kind of people are your readers? Intelligent, good looking and healthy. How do you get the inspiration for the movies? I wait until I'm tired. Tiredness brings random thoughts. Dreams are also inspirational. Would you say creating and realising your ideas takes alot of time from your "real life"? Do you feel like you spend too much time for your movies so that your "real life" gets neglected? Yes. Why do you prefer making WMVs instead of flash movies? Because I don't like the fact that you can tell instantly when something has been made in flash. It's not the WMV format that I like, it's the fact that I can draw all the characters and settings on paper and then scan the bits in to animate individually. I realise this can be done in flash, but I much prefer the look when it's made in Macromedia Director. What comments/marks did you get for "Alan" at your university? I got a decent mark. I noticed that nearly every movie of you features one or more songs as soundtrack, do you feel like music is an important part of your art? Did you ever consider creating music yourself? Music is very important, it adds a lot to the mood and helps emphasise emotions. I do make my own music. I made some of the dark ambient soundscapes on Salad Fingers, I am part of a band Called the Grape Digging Sharon Fruits and I make my own electronic music as "Foyf" and sometimes "DJ Foyf". What kind of music do you most listen to? Aphex Twin Many of your movies have a kind of sad undertone; do you think life is sad? No, not really. I think life is quite funny. What do you think is the best way to have a great day? A long sleep with a good dream. Are you interested in other people's art and creations? At the moment I'm enjoying the work of Aleksander Wasilewski, he's the guy that made Smile and Aura. I look forward to seeing more from him. Any comments on what's going on on this planet those days? If I did I'd probably start a political punk rock band and sing about my views. What does the future of fat-pie.com look like? I'm gonna change it into a Hulk Hogan fansite. What are your plans? I'm gonna sell out. Ok, thats everything for today! Anything you want to add? Nah. Okie, thanks alot for this interview, has been a pleasure for me and I can't wait to see more of your art, stay smart and good luck for the future! Cheers Kid. It was slightly less fun than I imagined, but then again I did imagine it would be a lot of fun so I guess it was my fault for setting my expectations so high. | Links:
